Make Your Own May Day Basket
A Classic Spring Tradition
Printable instructions
May Day baskets are a classic spring tradition, and they're the perfect craft for celebrating the season! This easy-to-follow guide will help you create your very own May Day basket using simple materials. Whether you use it to gather flowers, fill it with treats, or display it as a festive decoration, this craft will bring a bit of spring joy into your home.
What You’ll Need:
A pre-cut paper plate* (we used 7 inch)
Skewers x 2 (or a similar thin, long object)
Paper strips (construction paper works well)
How to Make Your Own May Day Basket
Step 1: Weave in the First Strip
First, take your pre-cut plate* and weave a skewer through to guide your paper strips. (A basket weave should alternate under, over, under, and over through the plate.)
Once your skewer is all the way through, use the guide to weave the strips of paper. Leave an equal amount of paper hanging off each side of the plate.
*Grown-ups: We prepped the plates by gently folding them in half and making 12 evenly spaced cuts with scissors through the plate.
Step 2: Reverse the Pattern
Next, remove the skewer and reverse the over-under pattern so it is opposite the colorful strips you just wove. Follow the skewer with the next strip of paper and repeat until your plate is full.
Step 3: Form the Basket
Then take the strips hanging off the edge and staple them together toward the middle strip. The basket should naturally start to curve.
Step 4: Add the Handle
Finally, use the stapler to attach a paper strip as a handle to each side of the basket.
Your mayday basket is complete! Use it to gather flowers or as a spring decoration!
